Welcome to Hickory Day School

Proud to be an IB PYP School

Hickory Day School is the only non-sectarian, independent school in Hickory. We offer transitional kindergarten through eighth grade students a rigorous educational experience set in a warm, nurturing environment. We are one of only fourteen schools in North Carolina authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme and have been authorized since June 2005.

Our low student-teacher ratio provides the opportunity for individualized attention to each child’s educational needs. The HDS curriculum reflects the NC Standards Course of Study and the IBO curriculum in the primary and middle school grades and is instrumental in the development of action-oriented, responsible citizens who think globally and embrace the opportunity to learn. Our IBO-trained teachers actively incorporate technology, field studies, Spanish, dramatic and visual arts, and the physical wellness program into the core curriculum so that our students apply that knowledge and experience to the key concepts they are learning in the classroom.

Our school culture encourages family participation and community involvement in our students’ educational experience. Students engage in projects to learn about and to assist charitable organizations within the community. We host multiple events for our school family throughout the year, and we invite family and community members to share valuable, applicable knowledge within the classroom to highlight culturally and academically diverse experiences that relate to our students’ courses of study. If you are interested in finding out more about our alternative to the traditional private school setting, please contact us to set up a tour.
